I’m getting a new tat…

22 04 2009

I’ve had the urge to get another and my dad has the urge to get a first.  So, we’re going to get the same one…there’s lots of symbolism so let me briefly explain.  Actually, let’s have Richard Rohr explain…

“Some parts of us grew up too soon; some parts of us never grow up. Believe it or not, they both have something to teach us – if we can just trust and let them befriend one another a little more.  One is called the old man (senex), and the other is called the eternal boy (puer eternus).  We need them both. The old man will not change without the contact with his eternal boy; the eternal boy cannot change without the love and challenge of his old man…The old man has the magical power to absorb the shadow of the boy. The grandfather makes it possible for a person to leave his darkness aside and walk in the light that he knows is there but can’t easily find…You can hold for them what they cannot yet transform…When they hate or fear, you love back. The young boy represents a love that comes about through being wounded, and the old man represents love that is willing to wound…Eternal boys need old men to survive physically and psychologically. Old men need eternal boys to thrive spiritually.”

senex-puer

The tension of the 2 words lies on the alpha and the omega, the beginning and end. That is the only way the 2 can be fully balanced.

I’m getting mine on my right forearm…not sure where my dad is getting his…probably on his fake hip.
